New CLuB publication by PhD student Faye Lewis
We’re proud to announce a new publication in the European Journal of Surgical Oncology, first-authored by PhD student Faye Lewis and led by Dr. Sharon O’Toole, Prof. John O’Leary, and Dr. Mark Ward. The study presents promising developments in the detection of circulating tumour cells (CTCs) — key indicators of metastasis — in patients with rare epithelial ovarian cancers.
Using a liquid biopsy approach, the research team successfully enriched and detected CTCs from both peripheral and ovarian vein blood. Crucially, the study shows that these tumour cells can be identified even in early-stage disease in these rare cancers, underscoring the potential for earlier diagnosis, improved disease monitoring, and more targeted clinical intervention.
We extend our deepest thanks to the patients and their families for their generous participation, and to the exceptional staff at St. James’s Hospital, Dublin, whose support was essential throughout the study. The team is continuing longitudinal follow-up of the patient cohort, with further findings to be shared in the near future. Thank you to the Higher Education Authority for funding this research.
